Warner Bros. Delays Theatrical Release of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet

It’s news we’ve all been dreading as we near the highly-anticipated film’s release, but Warner Bros. has confirmed that Christopher Nolan’s latest project Tenet will be delayed, but rather than to next year like so many delayed films this year, it will now open at the end of July, according to Variety.

“We’re especially thrilled, in this complex and rapidly changing environment, to be bringing Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, a global tentpole of jaw-dropping size, scope and scale, to theaters around the world on July 31,” Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said in a statement. “It’s been longer than any of us could’ve imagined since we’ve seen a movie on the big screen, and to acknowledge Chris’ fans as we count down to ‘Tenet’’s opening day, we are also excited to offer his masterpiece ‘Inception’ in theaters for its 10th anniversary on July 17.”

The most recent Tenet trailer arrived stamped with the tag, “Coming to theaters,” though copy within the YouTube video continued to push the July 17 release. And while everyone at Warner Bros. remained optimistic situations will improve enough for them to release the film and NATO recently confirmed theaters would be open in time, it appears Warner Bros. would rather be safe than sorry by delaying the film by two weeks. Tenet’s success will obviously pave the way for other planned releases, including Disney’s Mulan remake on July 24 and Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman 1984 on August 14.

The film is written by Nolan and will utilize a mixture of IMAX and 70mm film, which is something he’s become famous for.

The director first made an impact in 2001 with his indie film Memento. His next film, Insomnia, was also a modest hit. but it wasn’t until Batman Begins hit theaters in 2005 that Nolan became a box office force in his own right. The Prestige was Nolan’s last movie to gross under $200 million worldwide. His other films include The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk.

Nolan is producing Tenet along with his partner Emma Thomas and is currently slated for a July 31 release.

Exclusive: Aaron Taylor-Johnson teases new Christopher Nolan movie Tenet: “John David Washington is going to be exceptional”

Christopher Nolan remains one of the few film directors around today who can command a huge budget while also keeping his projects hidden away from the outside world. With his next movie Tenet, the filmmaker is being extra secretive. Case in point: a trailer for the action thriller has been revealed to the public – but has only been seen by those film fans who saw Hobbs & Shaw in cinemas. No online release.

Even the actors who are set to appear in Tenet are barely allowed to discuss the movie. While speaking to our sister publication Total Film, Aaron Taylor Johnson, who was promoting his new movie A Million Little Pieces, was only able to touch on the Nolan film, barely giving anything away.

“I can’t really talk about it – it’s definitely zipped shut,” he said. “But [Nolan]’s extraordinary. It’s great to see him in his process. He’s a genius. It’s a really great experience and I’m super-grateful to be a part of the cast. John David Washington is just going to be exceptional. He’s phenomenal. I’m excited for people to see it.

“I can’t really say anything else about the project, but I feel very lucky to be in a Nolan film because I love every film he’s made. And that’s all I want to do as an actor. I’m not really pushing for anything more than that. I want to observe. I want to experience. I want to be in the world of great filmmakers, and you don’t have any regrets that way. You can be in a small role. Or a big role. Whatever. It doesn’t really matter. As long as you’re grafting and learning, and I’ve got so much more to learn.”

While that may not have been the most revealing answer ever, Nolan fans will surely be even more desperate to find out more about the tantalising Tenet.

Also in this month’s Total Film magazine, Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips speak at length about Joker, with Phillips also touching on how the movie has been influences by The Hangover trilogy and whether there could be a sequel. The new issue reaches store shelves on August 23.
